Enphase Installer Toolkit
Redesigning for Efficiency
Redesigning for
Efficiency
Enphase Energy is a global energy technology company that designs and manufactures software-driven home energy solutions, including solar microinverters, batteries, and energy management products. Installer Toolkit is utilized to configure an Enphase System completely.
Setting
The Context
Problem
Enphase Energy needed an efficient and user-friendly solution for configuring their solar energy systems. The legacy app had two major issues:
1. Complex workflow
The app's structure wasn't aligned with installer needs, leading to confusion and wasted time.
2. Inconsistent design
The app lacked a cohesive design language, making navigation difficult.
This hampered installer productivity. The challenge was to create an app that streamlined the installation workflow, making it easier for installers to set up microinverters, batteries, and gateways.
My role
I joined this project in its early stages to co-direct the app revamp process. My responsibility was to understand the user pain points, define the app’s structure and visual design, and ensure a seamless experience. In the initial stages, I worked closely with stakeholders, project managers, and fellow designers to develop the basic architecture of the application and a streamlined workflow.
Legacy App
The installation process in the old app was difficult and inconsistent, leading to delays. Users often found the instructions confusing and the steps varied each time, causing frustration. Because the process wasn't straightforward, people often needed extra help, which made the installation take even longer. As a result, the efficiency and user satisfaction with the installation were quite low.
Gathering Insights
We talked to the installers, understanding their pain points, frustrations, and needs during the installation process. Observed installers interact with the existing app to identify usability issues.
We also had a lot of user feedbacks and concerns of the existing app that came from mails, app store comments and all. We analysed them, sorted and categorised them into different sections.

Early Observations
We visited the site, Conducted interviews with installers. They do not follow a common process. Every installer follows different process. So it lacked accuracy and lots of time taken to complete the installation.
Key Insights
The system setup may vary based on different regions, devices, and configurations. Therefore, the solution should be flexible, adaptable, and scalable. Technicians may range from highly trained and certified professionals to hired personnel from third-party firms with limited knowledge. Hence, the solution should include a guided workflow to help technicians complete the installation process smoothly and efficiently.
Simplified Design
A clear and intuitive navigation structure enhances user experience by making it easier to find and access features.
Task-oriented Workflow
Organized according to the typical installation steps, this workflow streamlines the process, making it more efficient.
Easy Access
Easy access to frequently used functions and configuration options ensures users can quickly perform the tasks.
Design
Strategy
We conducted a week-long design sprint with stakeholders and designers to create an ideal experience for ITK. By the end of the sprint, we had developed a clear vision for the project.
User-centric approach
Aligned the app’s structure with user needs. The redesign focused on simplicity, clarity, and efficiency.
Streamline the installation workflow
We thoroughly analysed the existing app’s structure and identified pain points. We considered the existing user journey, touchpoints, and critical tasks. The goal was to create a logical and intuitive flow that aligns with user needs. Based on that we organized the app’s content hierarchically, defined the new navigation structure, ensuring logical flow and easy access to essential features.
Cohesive design language
The initial sketches helped us to explore different layouts and arrangements. The architecture considered scalability as new features might be added. We defined a clean and intuitive interface, emphasizing task-oriented elements and minimizing distractions.
Ideation
We learned the end-to-end process of Enphase solar system installation from installation to post commissioning.
The process begins with the installer creating a site activation on the Enlighten Manager platform. They then visit the installation location. Next, they mount the panels, Envoy device, and other hardware on the roof, ensuring everything is connected correctly. Each device is scanned using a QR code to integrate it into the system, and the meter that tracks energy production is configured. Following this initial setup, the installer establishes a connection with the Envoy through the app to provision the system. Provisioning essentially prepares the system to communicate with the utility company's grid. The installer then checks for and installs any necessary firmware updates to the system devices.
Once the installation is complete, the homeowner receives system access information, typically a login for a monitoring app called Enlighten, which allows them to track their solar energy system's performance.
Information Architecture
Created the IA to streamline the user journey and ease the installation process.
We created the architecture flexible, scalable & modular format, because it needs to be adaptable for different region, different kinds of devices.
Bringing
Designs to Life
At Enphase, we have a dedicated team to train installers on using the Installer Toolkit app correctly. During the app revamp, we engaged with this team to understand the entire process, refine the information architecture, and develop wireframes based on their feedback. This collaboration was crucial due to the technical complexities involved.
We initially created a simple and linear flow for commissioning. As we progressed, we incorporated multiple Envoy systems, commercial systems, region-specific configurations, and different device types. Based on discussions with stakeholders and feedback from installers, we created low-fidelity wireframes.
In the legacy app, the commissioning process consisted of numerous individual steps. We streamlined these into a step-by-step guided and continuous flow, enabling installers to complete the process easily and quickly.
Streamlining Navigation for Clarity
The legacy app's navigation was neither intuitive nor consistent, leaving installers without proper guidance on how to perform the commissioning process.
Streamlining Navigation for Clarity
" We developed a clear, intuitive navigation structure and designed a task-oriented workflow. This streamlined the installation process, making it easier for installers to set up the devices "
Streamlining Navigation for Clarity
Based on feedback from usability testing and internal stakeholders, we iterated on the designs. The new site details screen features intuitive navigation and a task-oriented workflow. We streamlined the installation process, making it simpler for installers to set up microinverters, batteries, and gateways. The connectivity screen allows installers to easily monitor connectivity status and configure the network.
Key Screens
Here are key screens from the final app, showcasing the improved navigation, streamlined workflows, and enhanced usability for a better installation experience.
The Impact
The streamlined workflow reduced installation time significantly, improving overall efficiency. Installers appreciated the user-friendly interface, leading to higher satisfaction. Clear instructions and intuitive design minimized installation errors.
